Heidi Heidi Update and etc.

Let's start with the etc. We had a dreadful night -- Maize was panting and whining and restless and would not sleep. Since she sleeps in our room, this meant I didn't sleep either and was worried sick that I should be driving her off to be euthanized. This is such a rough time.

But after I gave in/got up at 4 a.m. and after tending to all the various age groups I did some reading, and based on that I took off her fentanyl patch -- in about two hours she had finally stopped wandering, whining and panting -- and is still asleep. She is still nearing her end, but thank goodness I did not do it because of the medication effects...

And shifting from end of life to beginning, we have our Heidi2 update -- thanks, John and Kristine!

"Our little Heidi is a very outgoing puppy and loves to meet new people and animals.  She now chases Mika and engages her in play... after a couple laps around the lawn she gets tired.  When the two are outdoors Mika seems to keep a watch on her at all times.

Heidi likes to ride in the car.  On Christmas eve we ran errands and she rode in the crate with Mika for several hours.  They shared the crate nicely and slept most of the time right next to each other.  When we let her out to potty she does it so effortlessly... never making us wait and wander (unlike her aunt/sister).

Today we did our weekly weight check at my office and she and Lainey each gained 2 pounds!

We are a tired but blessed family!

That is an excellent update -- but am I the only one who remembers that John and Kristine were supposed to update about both of their babies on their assigned day?! We need a picture of KaiBaby!

KaiBaby!!!!

Collective AAAHHHHHHHHHH :) Thanks John and Kristine!

What great pictures!! The stroller is hilarious! Luv these puppies!! Yes, we want baby updates too, the human kind!
And M-A, so sorry the night was rough. I remember the side effects of that patch for Abby. She whinned and carried on and it was just an awful sound. So hard. Hugs to you....

Yes...where is he!!?:) LOVE the pictures of the other babies though!

Mary-Ann, continued wishes that however things happen with Maize there will be peace for both of you during this time.

So sorry to hear about Maize's and your rough night. It's hard to hear about Mrs. Maize being uncomfortable. I think of her often and continue to keep her and your family in my thoughts.

I enjoy seeing the photos of Heidi and Lainey :) Such sweet things! Would love to also see how Baby Kai is doing. How much does he weigh now? I'm sure it is not 18 pounds!

Hi All-

I posted this question on Berner-L, then realized I had a group of experts in puppy travel right under my nose! We've enjoyed following everyone's exploits with the H litter and hope that things settle down a little for you, M-A. Ok, here's the question:

"I have the good fortune help a friend pick up a puppy for her family. It's not quite a Berner (Port. Water Dog). She has done her research and is buying from what looks to be a very reputable breeder. She has also gotten some tips from her dog trainer.

My Berner-L friends are so experienced at this, I was hopping you could help us with some suggestions about what to bring in the car to get the puppy home safe and sound.

We visit the puppy tomorrow and are picking him up Friday morning. We will have a 6 hour drive with the puppy to get home from there. What should we bring with us?"

Thanks in advance!

Without a doubt, the one essential puppy travel item is a good crate. Loose puppies in a moving vehicle are an absolute no-no for us. Yes, he/she will cry, whine, moan, howl and perhaps even scream a bit but deal with it. The alternative is all bad. Not saying it can't be done but the odds are against you so why tempt fate?

Good chew stuffs to include mini-kongs, bully sticks and the like. Something to occupy them once the crying stops. Plenty water because extended periods of crying induce intense thirst (even in big dogs). Yes, potty stops will be necessary.

I'll let others chime in as we are not the most experienced but the above works for us.

Hi Alex's Dad-
Great point about having puppy in crate for safety. We have some friends who went through a terrible time after their un-tethered Berner went through the rear glass. Same idea as baby in car seat.
Good point about extended crying leading to thirst. Not sure I would have thought of that.
Thanks!
Jill

Holy cuteness!! I love the baby x2 updates!

I am sure Mary-Ann could tell us because that puppy love train went a looongg way... I have brought 2 puppies home from Salt Lake City(thanks Mary-Ann and Kim :) )-a 7 or so hour drive and one home from California-a 2 day drive for me. I think you need-a small crate, bowls for food and water, food, water, poop bags, collar and leash, a couple toys and a bully stick or kong as Alex's dad suggested. I strap the crate in with a seat belt. It probably wouldn't hurt to bring a cooler with some stuff for the humans so you don't have to stop for food. I stopped every 2 1/2 to 3 hours for about 15-20 mins for potty, food, water and play breaks at a park or nice rest stop. When we came back from California we went more like 4 hours between stops.
Zeke the little angel pretty much slept the whole way home. Because all together now :HE IS PERFECT"...

Talk about perfect!!! He is one of the cutest babies I have ever seen!!! Only my two were cuter. Thank you soo much for the pictures! Keep them coming!

Heidi Heidi - what a cutie and I love the hairdo in the weigh-in pic in the box. Just great.
There will be an ongoing cuteness tie between Heidi and KaiBaby what a perfect sleeping baby picture.

Wow--talk about product placement: that sweet-faced little Heidi in the Vanguard box! Just a little sprout...

Love the weigh- in in the box photo! So cute! I can just see her trying to squeeze in to it 20-30 lbs from now! Kinda like me in Spandex :) Kaibaby is beautiful! I also love that Mika shares her crate. While Nora has done a complete 180 and thinks Holden is the best thing since sliced bread, I don't think he'd be welcome in her crate :( I haven't had all of the dogs in the car yet, while Holden is still little, a big crate and and two smaller ones ( got a Corgi too) will fit, but once he's a big boy, we'll have to get creative, likely involving an x-pen, if anyone has any suggestions for that! I have a mid-sized SUV.
M-A, hoping that Maize is more comfortable without the Fentanyl patch......
