When Fun Means Success

After 17 days on the road, I arrived home last night with mixed feelings. I am in love with Lucky the Leprechaun (aka the RV) but home is also nice -- isn't it great that we do not always have to choose one thing or another, but can enjoy both? I had help with the packing up in Missoula yesterday...

Not Charles Manson! That is Dear Husband (and Aysha). In addition to being super helpful with camp take-down (he was a wrestler, after all ;), Dear Husband took this picture for us...

You see, Lori had a terrible fall as she was stepping over an x-pen and so from Day One we would say, "Don't tell Lori" as we stepped over the low x-pens. It became a bit of a mantra and truthfully -- that little chant made us very careful.

Zoey's UD...

I only showed Zoey in Utility four times on the trip and the reason Zoey finished that UD yesterday is because I remembered to ask Dear Husband to bring the special collar, which he did on Monday evening. How could I have forgotten that collar?! I bought it for Abra when she was High in Trial at the 2001 Specialty, and I use it on every dog when showing in obedience...

Halo and Maize both earned their UDs wearing that collar, and so clearly that was the issue. I put that collar on Zoey yesterday and added a pair of Lucky Socks sent to me by Carol -- and there you go: UD. Zoey's score was a 191.5 with a no sit on something so the run was quite good.

For those who do not do obedience, Utility is a complicated and tough class. The dog does quite a bit away from the handler, and you are in the ring for a good ten minutes performing the exercises. Earning a UD is a big deal. But there is more...

The AKC has a special titling program called Versatile Companion Dog (VCD). It rewards dogs who reflect versatility by titling in three different events: obedience, agility, and tracking. There are different levels depending on level of the earned titles; Zoey was already a VCD2.

The VCD3 requires a UD, AX and AXJ (or AXP and AJP), and TDX. In 2016, 14 dogs -- of all breeds -- earned the VCD3. Zoey is now a VCD3, rare in our breed and even rarer on a Grand Champion.

It was a very good trip. We had so much fun, got to see more beautiful country than intended, visited with friends, and we showed dogs.

Sparkle earned 20 points towards her Bronze Grand Championship, got her first Novice B obedience leg, and finished her OJP, earning the Versatility Dog Excellent award from the BMDCA. Bummer about coming into season but that gives us more time to work out the jumps (and I do mean jumps) in obedience.

Claire was shown twice in the 4 - 6 months puppy class and was Group 1 both times.

Harper B for Brand New Knee had TPLO #2 and is doing great.

Aysha and Kaya finished a CD from Novice A, making Kaya a BMDCA Working Dog. The Rat Terrier and Aysha gained so much experience, and Aysha placed several times in the Owner-Handled group. Baby Tika's Reserve yesterday -- wow!

Zoey's UD -- no words to say what that means to me.

And nobody tripped over an x-pen - thanks to Lori.

Success in so many ways.

That list of accomplishments is just about as good as it gets. Earning a UD is an especially difficult task and takes a lot of work. Mary-Ann, you and your wonderful dogs are fantastic!

That photo made me nauseous and then I laughed out loud.
