Micro(wave) Training & New Berner Lover

I continue to be amazed at what training successes can be accomplished in small sessions while I heat things up in the microwave or make the morning toast. I keep these handy...

Fun Fact: the deer LOVE those as well. I guess this should not be a surprise since they are, after all, called ANIMAL Crackers. If they were meant for people, wouldn't they be called People Crackers?!

Anyway, I keep those open/available for quick and easy reinforcing, and while something is toasting or heating up, I train. For example, here is the whole crew practicing a down stay...

Training is a two way street, of course. All relationships *should* be reciprocal.

Sparkle: Okay Claire - pay attention. If you sit and hold something and look especially cute, the human cookie dispenser will pay out.

Claire: Got it!

And so I see the above and what can I do? I pay out in Animal Crackers, of course. Guess what happens? More of the above.

A puppy (aka Claire) reminds me that Life with Dogs is a lot about learning to communicate in a shared language. I love the opportunity to exist with this puppy in constant invitation; contrast that with an attitude of imposition, which reflects too many training approaches.

It is the difference between "wanna?" and "YOU WILL." Look at the above photos if you wonder if invitation training works.

And remember -- lessons from Life with Dogs typically applies equally to Life with Humans.

I invite you to have a terrific and wonderful day.

Yes, I am learning a new language, Hettie. There is almost nothing that carries over from my one previous dog. As in people, a completely different personality. I do wonder if there were an older dog in the house if she would pick up on things as your Claire is doing with Sparkle. :)

I am lucky that Bravo is such a compliant, easy fellow. It has made me a bit lazy in the training department. I love these mini training sessions, and vow to try some of our own! He loves a snack, so I expect it will be win-win.

Berkeley Rose. Could she be any lovelier? <3

Is that baby for real!? She cannot possibly be any cuter?! And those bright, intelligent eyes! Wow!

She's a doll baby!
