The Difference in a Week

A week ago I drove to the vet with a blind, sick dog, overwhelmed with anxiety, sorrow, fear -- and flooded with those familiar thoughts of, "I can't do this" and "I can't stand to see her like this." I am pretty convinced panic is a cause of death for too many dogs.

I get it. I have felt it. And I have learned that panic is not actually a terminal diagnosis -- it is just a feeling you have when you don't know what is happening and you are worried it is going to end badly.

Here is Zoey today...

We stared down her Lymphoma and it looks like we are getting another remission. She is still terminal -- and so are the rest of us.

Panic is never a good state in which to make permanent decisions.

And "I can't do this" and "I can't stand to see her like this" makes it all about us, and a dog's life is not about us -- it is about her.

No decision to end a life should EVER be made in a panic and/or because it is hard for a human to see a dog have an imperfect life. Slow the train down, seek help/support, and your dog may well live to chase another ball.

Zoey's granddaughter also loves to chase balls -- here is Claire, now ten months old (and a moose).

Enlarge to see the family unicorn horn...

I will be Driving Miss Daisy to Boise next weekend, if all stays stable -- for now, she is having fun with her family...

rePete sends his wish that your Saturday is amazing...

“No decision to end a life should EVER be made in a panic and/or because it is hard for a human to see a dog have an imperfect life.” ABSOLUTELY!!!!! No living being comes with an expiration date. All of us have ups and downs, good days and bad. This is true regardless of being healthy or not. Life is precious and worth fighting for/being uncomfortable for!
