Day One Pictures & etc.

I will add all photos of Day One to this Blog --  so check this for pictures...

This is Squeaker, the boy we thought was not going to live. I marked his head so I could tell him apart and make sure he nursed well, but he is easy to tell now since he is a loudmouth!

Hi Mom!

I am not sure how I am staying up all night since I usually go to bed before 9 but here it is -- 3:30 a.m. -- and I am still doing just fine. Syd is looking pretty tired though...

5:30 a.m. -- all is well! Puppies are nursing and getting plump, and Syd is a great mom. They are not big puppies -- most are about 13 - 14 ounces with one girl that is over 16 ounces and a boy who is a little over 12.

In this picture is a boy in the middle and girls on either side...

The Four Girls (not in oder): London, Pippi, Heidi, Barcelona

The Boys: Austin, Squeaker, undecided

The H Litter is the fourth generation to use this whelping box -- indeed, we currently have FOUR generations of Kaibab dogs in our house! I cannot wait to get that four generation picture :)

I had thought to name all the puppies after cities but apparently that was not meant to be. For example, when Pippi was born I immediately thought of Pippi Longstocking because the puppy has high white on her right front -- just like Zoey! And so I started calling her "Pippi" :) Here are a couple of pictures of her so you can see what I mean...

Look at how well Syd looks...

I love the little feet...

Just two puppies -- note the pigment starting to come in on their noses...

(7:30 pm) We take raising a litter very seriously. I have already mentioned the awake person 24/7 for the first week, but we also approach feeding puppies with intent. We make certain to rotate Syd so that nursing happens on both sides, and we weigh puppies twice a day to follow weight gain. If someone is lagging, that puppy will have extra nursing time without competition. We do not supplement -- supplementing is the enemy of good milk production! Instead we ensure that lots of nursing is happening, and that puppies are gaining appropriately.

Here are the morning and evening weights of puppies today:

Austin: 12.35/12.7

Squeaker: 14.9/16.15 -- From the brink of death to being loud and hungry!

Z: 13.7/14.3

Barcelona:  16.4/17.65

Heidi: 13.3/14.05

Pippi: 13.3/13.95

London: 13.95/14.35

The first milk is colostrum, and it is very important but doesn't pack on the weight like what happens when the milk comes in and so I am pleased that all puppies gained -- sometimes they actually lose weight in the first day or so. I expect the "real" milk to come in tomorrow and then the poor puppies will think they are drowning!

The whelping box is in the middle of the living room, and we have gated off all entrances to give Syd her own space. Interestingly, she is fine if Maize, Halo, or Zoey are in the other parts of the house but when Asia or Cadi are in she gets upset even though they are in another room; this is making things challenging but I suspect we will work through it -- new mother hormones are a little whacky :)

Here is a picture of Syd and the puppies after the evening weigh-in and whelping box cleaning...

And we end this first day with a picture of a puppy pile -- all seven enjoying the warming pad :)

And after 38+ hours up, it is finally my turn to get some sleep...zzzzz....

I'll add an "Amen!" to what someone else said -- breeding is best left to breeders because it is SO not for the faint of heart! Thank heavens you're on the other side of that one! That sounded ridiculously frightening from start to finish.

Thank goodness the babies are well and fine. What a day yesterday was. It was not only Sydney and the pups but my beloved boy, Zion's birthday. I just lost Zion on September 26th so Mary-Ann...you did it again. Had pups on one of my boys birthdays. What a nice way to honor Zion.

How sweet is that, Ter? Thinking of you and the Z boys... xo

I am not getting any work done! I just keep looking at puppy pix and checking the blog! Dang! Congrats again to Zed and Syd on a beautimous litter!

In addition to Syd's remembrance of Zion with her impeccable timing, may I point out that yesterday (11 October 2011) was also the Hunters Moon this year. I got all excited thinking it was the Harvest Moon--also known as the Blue Corn Moon--but that happened on 12 September. Hey, did anyone suggest Harvest Moon for a name?

by Lynn on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 13:43

I know where Squeaker got his moniker... but trying to figure out how the rest fit together. London, Barcelona and Austin are all cities... but Pippi threw me for a loop.

by Maddie's Mommy on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 14:54

Perhaps it's Pippi Longstockings?

by Terri Zimmerman on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 16:16

Pippi is after Pippi Longstocking. She has a long white sock on one leg. Z is named because Mary-Ann was sweet enough to honor Zion and the other Z boys including Zed and his Sire Zack. Zed's name is Kaibab'z Five Z's Zed....the little z is for Zack, the five Z's are for Zephyr, Zodiac, Zane, Zaltana & Zion....so it was nice of her to name him Z. FYI, this is the 2nd time Mary-Ann has had a litter on the birthday of one of my Z boys. Zed's older siblings from Halos first litter was born on July 22;2007, the same as Zane's birthday although he was born in 2003. I struggled with getting one of those boys as they were so much like Zane and Zaltana but I was just too raw after losing Zane 2 months prior. And I loved those boys. Anyway I ended up getting Zed who was a repeat breeding and he is so much like Zane and even Zaltana that I couldn't be happier with him short of a few holes and a couple muddy paths....:)

Syd does look good! YAY! Love the names and the history behind them! Yes, even the Heidi history! ;-)

by Marianne on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 19:05

Our first child was born on a full-moon day. The nursery at the hospital was full and babies were put in an overflow area. Nurses at the hospital said every full-moon day was a busy day in the maternity ward. Wonder if ...
Syd looks Great!
